How To Lose an Extraterrestrial in 10 Days by Susan Grant

Unlike her siblings, Evie Holloway can’t stand the thought of a life of public service. She’s content to focus her energies on raising her children after her divorce and her new chocolate dessert business. When Evie’s sister decides that Evie’s house is the best place to hide the Reef now that the devices that turned the normal man into a killing machine were removed, Evie thinks her sister is crazy and bets her that he’ll be gone in ten days. Unfortunately her sister took the bet and now Evie is stuck with the alien. At first Evie was worried Reef would break her bones if he stays, but now that he wants to return home she’s worried he’ll break her heart if he leaves.

This story is a sequel to My Favorite Earthling and Your Planet or Mine? and these books should be read first to fully appreciate everything included in this story. As usual, Susan did a great job with the characters, giving them enough conflicts to keep things moving along at a fast pace. Given the way the story ended, I really hope I get to read more about this universe. Recommended.

Dead Girls Are Easy by Terri Garey

Suppose you were dying and heading toward the light and you’re refused entrance. After a near death experience, Nicki Styx returns to her body, remembering everything, plus she has a new talent. A talent that let’s her talk with dead people or rather let’s dead people whine at her. Fortunately, the hunky Dr. Joe Bascombe who saved your life also wants to hear all of the details about your new talents. But when a murder victim wants Nicki to find her killer, she finds herself wrapped up in something much more complex than a mere murder. Now can Nicki and Dr. Joe manage to unravel the mystery or will Nicki have another chance to head toward the light?

This is a cute story and Terri manages to inject quite a bit of humor into the characters. I love Nicki’s personality and the way she manages to attract lots of dead people with problems to solve. If you’re looking for a fresh approach to a paranormal story, check out this book.

Wired by Liz Maverick

What if you could go back in time and change something? Anything? Would it be for the better? Or worse? And how would you know? L. Roxanne Zaborovsky learns she’s a pawn in a game of change the past played by Mason Merrick and Leonardo Kaysar. But unlike everyone else around her, she has a memory of what things were like before the past was changed. Both men seek to seduce her to reach their goal. But with any game of Good vs. Evil, there’s only one choice and now it’s up to Rox to make the right choice.

This is the first book in a new line from Dorchester known as Shomi. The line promises “Action Romance” and boy this book delivers. The plot is strong and every scene left me wondering what was going to happen next. The love triangle between the two men and Rox was confusing as both men seemed sincere and it was challenging to figure out who was the good guy. If you’re the least bit intimated by science fiction stories, you may want to avoid this book. But if you love sci-fi novels and can deal with complex series of interrelated events, I highly recommend this book.

It Must Be Magic by Jennifer Skully

Lili Goodweather’s gift allows her to communicate with animals, including Fluffy the cat who lives next door. But when Fluffy is the only eyewitness to a murder, Lili drags Fluffy’s owner along to find the murder victim. While Tanner Rutland enjoys Lili’s company, he doesn’t believe that Lili can talk to animals. And even when they find the victim, it's easier for him to believe Lili was the murderer than she talks to cats. Unfortunately the real killer isn't happy with the attention and soon Lili finds herself in danger. Now will Tanner finally accept Lili's gifts or will Lili find herself at the mercy of a murderer?

I’ve come to expect something a little different Jennifer’s books and this one is no exception. The mystery component of the story is well done and her quirky characters are simply great. A very enjoyable book.

An Accidental Goddess by Linnea Sinclair

Raherian Special Forces Captain Gillaine Davré wakes up to find she’s surrounded by strangers in a place she’s never been before. While this has happened before, especially after drinking heavily, it’s the first time she loses also loses 300 years. More distrubing, Gillaine also learns the people of this system now revere her as the Goddess, Lady Kiasidira.

At first Admiral Mack Markarian believes the sexy lady who woke up in his sickbay is a smuggler, but then he realizes Gillaine is full of secrets, including her uncanny resemblance to the Lady Kiasidira. While Mack finds himself growing closer to Gillaine, he learns a former enemy has returned to conquer his system. The same enemy the Lady Kiasidria defeated in the past. Now can Gillaine put aside her feelings for Mack to perform the same job she did 300 years earlier or will she risk the future of billions of people to secure her own happiness?

One of the speakers at the RWA conference used this book as an example of new direction for romance novels. To me this book seemed mostly a hybrid of traditional science fiction and with a strong romantic subplot. It was extremely well done. Though I doubt Nora Roberts has anything to worry about . Still as a long time fan of science fiction, I really enjoyed the change of setting and I'm looking forward to reading more of these types of books in the future.

Body Movers by Stephanie Bond

After Carlotta Wren’s parents skipped bail, leaving their family behind, she tried to raise her younger brother as best she could. With no money, she began a boring job working at Neiman Marcus selling designer clothes to her former friends. But her brother became involved with computer hacking and gambling, and soon finds himself arrested by a hot looking cop who tries to catch Carlotta’s interest. After bailing him out, she forces her brother to get a job and he ends up moving bodies for a funeral home while his new boss is looking to put the moves on Carlotta. Toss in a D.A., who’s looking for publicity by reopening her parent’s case, a murder investigation with Carlotta at the center; and three good looking men vying for Carlotta’s attention, her life is going to be anything but boring.

This book is the first in a series of books with Carlotta at the center. It introduces the characters by wrapping them up in a great mystery. There’s enough danger and confusion to leave you uncertain where the story is headed and it’s really easy to sympathize with Carlotta as Stephanie did a great job with her character. Definitely worth reading.

But with the number of demons creeping into her life lately, Kate might just welcome the help. Secrets abound as mother and daughter must keep their secrets from Kate’s husband, while Kate’s former husband appears to be inhabiting the body of her daughter’s teacher The research her former husband did just prior to his death now holds the key to the safety of the world. With the latest threat upon them, will Kate manage unravel the mysteries in time or will she watch as the demons destroy everything she values.

Julie was kind enough to autograph a copy of this book at the RWA Literacy book signing and I finished it long before the conference was over It’s a great book, though you really need to read the previous books to fully appreciate the story in this one. Julie also said that there’s a definite end to the overall story, which is good since I hate to see a story like this never end.

Love, Suburban Style by Wendy Markham

When Broadway star Meg Addams’ teenaged daughter starts having trouble in school, she decides to move back to the small town where she grew up. To her surprise, the small town has become a trendy suburban community filled with sushi shops and Hummers driven by soccer moms. Unfortunately, home prices have gone though the roof and the only house she can afford is rumored to be haunted. To make matters worse, living next door is her high school crush, Sam Rooney, who is also a single parent. Sparks fly from the moment they first meet, but will the two parents choose their children over their happiness?

This is a cute, character driven story. It’s filled with conflict ranging from Sam’s feelings toward his dead wife to the adjustments Meg must make so her daughter can live a normal life. I always love Wendy’s stories and this one is no exception.

The Cowgirl’s CEO by Pamela Britton

As the end of the barrel-racing season approaches, Carolyn Sheppard stood a good chance of winning the championship. Caro’s sponsor, Ty Harrison couldn’t be more proud, even though it was nearly impossible to tie the feisty cowgirl down to film a commercial for his boot company. But when her horse breaks a leg, Caro finds Ty right beside her offering his support. Smitten with Caro, Ty will do anything to win her affection, including letting her walk away. But will Caro realize how much she loves Ty before it’s too late?

This is another cute book from Pamela. A nice story and good characters make for an enjoyable read and a great way to pass the time until her next HQN NASCAR novel.

Hot Wheels and High Heels by Jane Graves

Darcy McDaniel returned from her Mexican vacation to find her husband has sold their house and cleared out their bank accounts leaving her with only her car and the clothes on her back. When repo man John Stark shows up to collect Darcy’s Mercedes, he sees her as an older trophy wife whose husband can’t pay her bills. With her life crashing around her, Darcy manages to convince John to give her a job as a receptionist to earn some money to buy the things she needs to attract a new husband. Working with Darcy was a real challenge for John, especially when she decides to repo cars for some extra money, but soon he finds herself falling for her. Now can John convince Darcy he’s the right man for her or will she find a new job as someone else’s trophy wife.

How can I resist a car-themed book? {laughs} Jane’s characters are great and the plot is well paced. There’s lots of humor throughout the book and I loved watching Darcy reinvent herself. Highly recommended.

Don’t Talk Back to Your Vampire by Michelle Bardsley

Eva LeRoy loved her job as the librarian of Broken Heart, Oklahoma. That is until the town became a battleground in a vampire war. Unfortunately Eva was one of the causalities and now she spends her days dead, while her teenage daughter runs around completely unsupervised. Eva finds one of the oldest vampires, Lorcan the Loner attractive and is ready to forgive him for killing her if only he can forgive himself first. But with evil lurking just outside of town, will Eva and Lorcan be able to save her daughter and the rest of the townsfolk or will they die a second time, never to live again.

The sequel to I’m the Vampire, That’s Why is fun story that shows you how life might be for a single mother turned vampire. I love the realism portrayed by the characters as you’re willing to believe that Eva is truly an average soccer mom, who just happens to be undead. If you like vampires and soccer moms, you might just want to give this book a try.

Code Name: Bikini by Christina Skye

Trace O’Halloran is under strict orders to rest so he can recover after his latest mission and a cruise ship looks like the perfect choice to spend his time. Just as Trace starts to relax and enjoy the company of the ship’s dessert chef, an old enemy appears and he’s forced back into active duty despite his less than perfect condition. Gina Ryan’s life is slowly descending to hell as her past secrets and her current secrets combine to insure she won’t have a future. To make things worse, she finally meets the perfect man, a man who’s fighting a covert battle on her cruise ship. Now will Gina join forces with Trace to defeat the ultimate evil or will Gina’s problems finally overwhelm her?

My only problem with this book was that I had to wait two months more than a year for it to be released . I particularly loved the heroine’s challenge, which you’ll need to discover for yourself since I don’t want to spoil the story . Now if only Christina would abandon her historicals, she could focus on her Navy SEALs we wouldn’t have to wait so long between stories .

Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum finds her life in danger again when someone arrives on the scene claiming to be Ranger’s wife and waiving a 9mm Glock. Soon she finds herself working closely with Ranger to locate his kidnapped child. Bullets and bombs and other mayhem await Stephanie as the body count rises. Now will she live long enough to see Thirteen or will her body parts be blasted all over the burb?

Okay, I’m biased. I love Evanovich’s books, but I will admit it’s hard to coming up with fresh stories for characters that have already survived though eleven other books. This book brings with it a fresh twist and gives us some new insight into the mysterious Ranger. A real Stephanie Plum fan would have read this book long before now (and you can now see how much of backlog I really have ) Highly recommended.
