Santa Baby by Jennifer Crusie, Lori Foster, and Carly Phillips

In Hot Toy by Jennifer Crusie, Trudy Maxwell finds herself looking for the hottest toy for her nephew on Christmas Eve. Unable to find it, she starts dumping toys from the shelves hoping that someone put it on the wrong shelf. But when she finds last year’s version, two men offer to buy it from her for big bucks. When she refuses to sell, the two men drag her into a dangerous adventure and force her to choose sides. Now Trudy must decide which man is telling the truth or she may lose more than her nephew’s toy.

In Christmas Bonus by Lori Foster, Maggie Carmichael finds herself in charge of her father’s company after his death. Eric Bragg is in love with Maggie even though she’s ten years his junior and the president of the company, but he ignores her because he doesn’t want her to think he’s only after her for the money. Now it’s up to Maggie to make the first move and a sprig of Mistletoe might be just the answer she’s looking for.

In Naughty Under the Mistletoe by Carly Phillips, Antonia Larson decides to go after the hunky partner in the law firm where she works and arranges to meet him under the mistletoe. Maxwell Corbin shows up at the Christmas party because his father and brother insisted, but when a mysterious stranger gives him the kiss of the lifetime, he can’t help but wonder if the kiss was intended for his brother. Now that Toni knows that Maxwell isn’t the guy she wanted to seduce, will she let herself be whisked away on the basis of a single kiss?

I can’t believe that Jennifer managed to pack such a powerful story into such a short space, while Lori’s and Carly’s stories manage to pump the heat up as high as you can get. If you’re looking for a set of three intense short stories, bump this book to the top of your stack. You won’t be disappointed.

Nerds Like it Hot by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Gillian McCormick just witnessed a murder and the murderer has ties to the mafia. Her friend Cora hatches a plan to give her a complete makeover and send her on a cruise for nerds in order to escape the mob. Cora also hired a private investigator, Lex Manchester to go along to help protect her. Once on the cruise, Gillian – aka Norma Jean – first finds herself the victim of a burglary and then almost ends up dead after an apparent accident. But worse of all, she finds herself falling in love with Lex. Now can Gillian leave Lex and go into hiding to stay alive or will Lex follow her to the bitter end?

Another great book for Vicki Lewis Thompson. While the plot is somewhat predictable, the cast of characters is great – ranging from a cross-dressing killer to a detective who's closet nerd, and a retired 82 year old actress, who’s outlasted several husbands and is ready for yet another, not to mention a complete assortment of nerds in all shapes and sizes. If you’re a nerd like me or just love reading about nerds, run out right now and get this book. You’ll love it.

Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum is fed up with chasing fugitives, so she quits her job as a bounty hunter and applies for a more sensible job as the button factory. Unfortunately, trouble has a way of following Stephanie as she finds someone has beaten her car with a baseball bat, shot holes though her car, set the backseat on fire and finally blows up her car yet again. Not only that, but she manages to get fired from one job after another - often with spectacular results. And the competition between Joe Morelli and Ranger ratchets up a notch as they both fight to make sure she stays alive. Now Stephanie is definitely in trouble, and the only way for her to stay alive is to use her bounty hunting skills to track down the person who wants her dead before they succeed in killing her.

Stephanie is back again with the usual cast of characters and is funnier than ever. There’s a lot of good sexual tension between Stephanie and Joe and quiet a bit of tension between Stephanie and Ranger. The only problem I had with this book was I wished Janet had written another couple of hundred pages. If you haven’t read one of these books, you should start at the beginning with One for the Money and work your way up as there is a lot of history that you should really know. But for a real Stephanie Plum fan, my only thought is why haven’t you read the book yet?

Full Scoop by Janet Evanovich and Charlotte Hughes

Maggie Farnsworth has a secret - a big secret. Fourteen years ago, her boyfrend, Carl Lee Stanton, was sentenced to jail for the murder of an FBI agent during an armored car robbery. Unknown to both Maggie and Carl Lee at that time, Maggie was pregnant with Carl Lee’s child. Forced to raise her daughter by herself, Maggie studied to become a pediatrician and is struggling to start her medical practice in her home town of Beaumont, South Carolina. When Carl Lee escapes from prison, the FBI assigns Zack Madden to protect Maggie, despite the fact that Zack’s father was the FBI agent gunned down by Stanton. While Maggie feels a strong attraction to Zack, which is the first time she has thought about a man since Carl Lee, she must find a way to stay alive long enough to act on her feelings.

This series has evolved from the beginning with the focus of the books shifting away from Max and Jamie as the primary characters and on to other characters in the same town. Max and Jamie are still around, appearing as recurring secondary characters in the story. In a way this makes the book better as it allows the authors to explore new territories, but I really liked Max and miss reading about him. Still Maggie and Zack are interesting characters and I particularly liked watching her psychopathic ex-boyfriend make his way across the country in order to kill Maggie. The ending could have been a little stronger, but it still was satisfying. I recommend reading it to anyone that likes complex stories with a touch of danger.

Saucer: The Conquest by Stephen Coonts

A year after the saucer incident, Rip Cantrell and Charlotte “Charley” Pine are trying to get their lives back on track. Rip is confused and doesn’t know what to do, while Charley decided to take a job flying a space shuttle to the moon as part of a French project to establish a viable lunar base. Unfortunately, the lunar base is merely a ruse for a madman’s plan to rule Earth. Now Charley and Rip are the only ones in a position to stop the madman and save the earth.

Another great book from Stephen Coonts. While not quite as good as the original book, Saucer, this book is definitely a page-turner and is very difficult to put down until you know the Earth is safe again. Before reading this book, you really should read the first one to get a complete understanding of the characters and their motivations. And while this book is not a romance novel by any stretch of the imagination, it does allow you to see how Charley and Rip grow closer to each other during the course of the book. Now real question is, will Coonts follow up this story with another Saucer book? Only time will tell.

Saucer by Stephen Coonts

While working in a Middle Eastern desert, Rip Cantrell sees a flash of light reflected from a piece of metal. When Rip investigates the reflection, it turns out to be a flying saucer buried underground. A US satellite spots the saucer and the government dispatches a team of Air Force personnel, including former Air Force test pilot Charlotte “Charley” Pine. When attacked by several military groups representing both government and private interests, Rip and Charley manage to escape and fly the 140,000-year-old saucer away from the desert in the nick of time. They return to the US only to come face-to-face with a billionaire who plans to auction the saucer to the highest bidder. Now Rip and Charley must dodge bullets and mayhem while they search for a way that insures that all mankind will benefit from this incredible discovery.

Okay, this isn’t a romance story, but it is one of the best books I’ve read in years. The story is like reading about a kid’s dream of finding their own personal flying saucer and all of the subsequent adventures he has. This tale has a believable plot that makes it seem plausible that someone could find and fly a saucer. I’ve had a similar story bouncing around in my head for years – too bad it wouldn’t be acceptable as a Blaze or even an HQN :( . If you enjoy science fiction or techno-thrillers, you absolutely have to read this book. Even if you don't, it's still a pretty good story.

Talk Nerdy to Me by Vicki Lewis Thompson

How does a Magna Cum Laude electrical engineer talk to a brilliant self-taught inventor? Nerdy, of course. Especially if the engineer is hot-bodied Charlie Shepherd and the inventor is the sexy fashion model Eve Dupree. Eve has just moved to the small town where Charlie lives, to work on her inventions, while Charlie is looking for a job outside the small town that challenges his engineering skills.

When Eve needs help with her latest invention, Charlie volunteers and the two of them work on her purple hovercraft powered by Eve's new bio fuel. However, Eve and Charlie frequently find themselves distracted as all that nerdy talk gets them both hot and bothered. Finishing the invention is not their only problem, as it now appears that someone’s just stolen the plans. Now they must race to finish the hovercraft while solving the mystery behind who’s trying to steal it.

Okay, I admit it. I’m a nerd. I even like to read and even write about nerds. My first novel length story I wrote is titled Geek Goddess, so it’s only natural that any book with the word nerd or geek in the title automatically makes it to my too be read pile. The same goes with any book written by Vicki Lewis Thompson as I loved reading her Duets, Temptations and Blazes. So when Vicki writes a new book about nerds, the book even never makes it to my to-be-read pile as I usually start reading immediately.

The big difference between this book and her previous nerd books is that both the hero and heroine are nerds. So even though the heroine is a fashion model, it doesn’t make her any less of a nerd. The plot is rich and complex, while the sex is hot and spicy. The combination works well making Talk Nerdy to Me a definite must read book for nerds and geeks and the people that love them (Hi Jill :) )
